ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada, Friday June 21, 2013 – The police have detained a 31 year old security guard to assist with investigations surrounding the distribution of child pornography photos on the social media.
On Tuesday the Facebook accounts of several Grenadians were tagged with photographs of a 16-year-old female student engaged in sexual acts. The matter was reported to Facebook and the account with the photographs was closed.
“The recent incident which sparked outrage among many social circles is indeed of serious concern to the Police and as such, a clarion call is made for perpetrators of young girls to dissuade from such practice,” the police said in a statement issued on Thursday.
The police have vowed to spare no efforts in bringing perpetrators to justice and urged parents to be more vigilant in supervising their daughters.
The alleged offender is likely to be charged with several counts of “sexual intercourse with a female between the age of 13 and 16 years”. If found guilty, he can face a maximum penalty of seven years in prison on each count.
While Grenada does not have laws regarding the distribution of sexual materials on the Internet, the island has signed and ratified several United Nations convention including the Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Sale of Children.
