BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Hard on the heels of general elections in Grenada on Tuesday, it’s the turn of voters in Barbados to go to the polls on Thursday.

According to the latest opinion poll published on Tuesday, the main opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) led by former prime minister Owen Arthur is likely to win as many as 20 seats out of the 30 seats to be contested in the general election.

Although Prime Minister Freundel Stuart has seen some improvement in his approval rating, his Democratic Labour Party (DLP) seems likely to succumb to a clear trend in the region over the last two years of opposition parties regaining power, the latest being the opposition New National Party (NNP) clean sweep of all seats in Grenada on Tuesday.

Recent opposition victories in the region include the People’s National Party (PNP) in Jamaica; the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) in The Bahamas; the One Bermuda Alliance (OBA) in Bermuda; the National Democratic Party (NDP) in the British Virgin Islands; the St Lucia Labour Party (SLP) in Saint Lucia; and, just last month in Nevis, when the Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) emerged victorious in early elections.
